The Story of The Moxie

Kris Catoe never planned on opening a salon. He loves doing hair and making his customers happy. He hates gathering sales tax and dealing with the phone company. But these things happen.

In 2003, Kris married his wife Laura. She's a Gadsden native, so he moved to her city and commuted to the salon he worked at in Trussville. After three years, long days seemed too long when it took another hour to get home. Once Kris and Laura decided it was time to start a family, Kris began looking for a salon closer to Gadsden.

In his search, he found that salons where he felt comfortable that weren't hiring. Salons that were hiring didn't feel comfortable. Laura mentioned an empty salon for rent on Locust Street.

In March 2006, Kris opened The Moxie Salon, a three-station, one-shampoo bowl establishment without a washer or dryer. In August, Laura found out she was pregnant.

In March 2007, Kris and Laura's son Ben was born. In the summer, readers of The Gadsden Times voted The Moxie Salon Best Salon in the 2007 Readers' Choice Awards. That fall, Kris began looking for a larger space for the Moxie.

In December 2007, the Moxie opened in its current location, 340 Locust Street, with four stations, two shampoo bowls and on-site laundry capability.
